2020 Washington Metro DC Chapter Contractor of the Year (CotY) Grand Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) for Kitchen Renovations
The client’s kitchen in their 1939 Colonial home needed updating.
Client Needs:
• Better and more work surface
• More storage
• Keep true to their traditional home style
The before kitchen was so poorly organized that it was hard to the client to use the space in an organized manner. Clutter collected everywhere.
The kitchen was oddly shaped with limited work surfaces and a lack of storage. The appliances also needed to be updated.
Before
The before kitchen has very little counter space. Counters and cabinets were very narrow lacking storage space.
Moving the powder room helped to be able to design and build a beautiful and highly functional kitchen.
Client Need Met: Removing the bulkhead above the former cabinets allowed us install taller cabinets to increase the needed storage.
Client Needs Met: A large island increased the counter space and work surface. Deep cabinets in the island provide needed storage. Quartz top in Gray Lagoon provides a durable yet easy maintenance countertop.
FUNCTIONALITY: Client’s do not need to spend a fortune to have high quality appliances: GE appliances rank high for cooking efficacy: GE Café 36” gas cooktop, 27” French door refrigerator, Zephyr Sienna Wall Hood. Surrounded by 3X12 Brilliant White tiles for easy cleaning.
LIGHTING: Recessed lights, undercounter lighting, and Kichler seeded glass pendants provide plenty of task and general lighting.
Daimlen 5-light Ring Chandelier in Brushed Nickel helps to define the breakfast table space.
High functioning GE Double ovens were selected to help aging backs of this older couple.
Cabinets feature Shaker doors and drawer fronts. Alabaster color and brushed nickel pulls help to achieve the traditional look the client’s wanted. Pull out storage helps to keep counters clear of clutter.
OBSTACLES OVERCOME / INNOVATIVE METHODS:
The kitchen had a dropped ceiling, we expected it was to conceal plumbing work for the above bathroom. However we were surprised that a previous remodeling project had relocated a dropped beam to allow new duct work to run from the basement to the upper level. The previous work was not structurally sound. We were able to overcome this change by installing multiple new beams and made modifications to the duct work.
We had expected plumbing work from above the dropped kitchen ceiling – not poor structural reframing from a prior renovation.
Developed and executed a solution to overcome the hidden issues above the kitchen ceiling, new structural beams and modified duct work.
Our clients are extremely happy with their new kitchen. We met all their needs for a better looking and functioning kitchen. Exceptional craftsmanship and creative problem solving are the backbone to the finished product.
