Mike Frew, Bowers Design Build Projects Estimator, lives a life dedicated to volunteerism in the Special Olympic community. Bowers Design Build recently completed a home remodel and renovation in Mclean,Va. The homeowner’ wanted to minimize formal spaces and maximize informal spaces, including renovating the kitchen for better circulation. The Covid-19 pandemic has prompted an intense focus on outdoor spaces, which offer the only safe place for homeowners to entertain. “It’s been a running joke in the office that everyone who’s calling wants a screened porch,” says Wilma Bowers of Bowers Design Build in McLean. “Now that they’re stuck in the house, they want an outdoor space built in conjunction with the kitchen. Everyone wants an extension of their home.”

Her firm is outfitting open-air spaces with fireplaces, TV and speaker systems, high-end finishes and power sources for lighting and laptops.

At AJ Madison, sales of outdoor-kitchen appliances are up, Petrino reports, as are wine fridges.

And because public pools are either closed or open with restricted occupancy, inquiries about backyard pools have skyrocketed, says Arlington landscape architect Jennifer Horn. “Everybody wants to build a pool right now, and everybody wants to build a fire pit. For 30 years, the health and safety of our clients and employees has always been critically important in the work we do.  The COVID-19 Pandemic caused the world to be more thoughtful about  health and safety. We have family members who are medical and public health professionals and took our role in the pandemic seriously.  Eventhough the CDC has reduced protocols as of May 2023, Bowers Design Build continues to employ common sense health measures including:

• Every Bowers Design Build employee knows that they are not to work when they are ill. We abide by all CDC and local public health guidelines.
• Our office and design staff have flexible work from home guidelines to reduce the spread of any illness.
• We continue to invite our clients to our McLean office for in-person design meetings, but have also perfected video meetings for design presentations as well.
• When we do have design meetings in a client’s home, we defer to a clients comfort level in terms of mask wearing, etc.  You will be greeted warmly, but shaking hands is optional.
• Every construction employee has access to face masks on the job and has an ample supply of hand sanitizer, gloves and disinfectant wipes.
• We communicate with our clients to ensure that we are doing all we can to create a safe and healthy environment that meets each clients’ individual needs and circumstances.

This whole house renovation was recently featured in Arlington Magazine’s Fall 2019 Issue on Multi-Generational Homes. There are always challenges with a one-couple renovation, let alone a project with double the wants and needs. This was also a chance to do something different—and prototypically significant—in Arlington.

This award-winning exterior space remodeling project featured designing and building a screened porch overlooking their back yard to add more livable space and to take advantage of their great wooded lot.

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) Metro DC Chapter named Bowers Design Build of McLean VA a 2019 Capital CotY TM winner in four categories of its annual awards competition at their “Evening of Excellence” held on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at the Westwood Country Club, Vienna, VA.

Kitchen Remodeling Northern Virginia – Better Circulation for Kitchen Remodel Project Profile – The former kitchen was dark and did not function adequately for this family. They wanted to update the kitchen to accommodate two cooks and they wanted increased efficiency for this two wage earner family that at times, needs to throw dinner together quickly. The homeowner wanted to change the look of the kitchen significantly getting rid of the stained darker cabinets and wanted to be sure to have separate drawers and refrigerator access for the children.

Kitchen Remodeling Project Profile – This Mclean, Virginia kitchen remodeling & renovation consisted of creating a truly open first floor plan. Their previously renovated kitchen (10 years prior) had increased the ceiling height, but left the space closed off to the rest of the living area. The homeowners felt closed-in while in the kitchen and isolated when in the dining room. The living room was avoided all together. As a result the first floor didn’t get used as much as they’d like. Opening up the space, with no walls or posts to obstruct the view, now allows the homeowners to enjoy the whole, integrated space daily.

This family loves to entertain. They not only wanted to update their kitchen but they also wanted to create better space for the way they live.

The kitchen was totally renovated with the latest products and finishes. A large island serves as a prep area, dining table and work station (laptop chargers and electrical outlets are hidden at each island corner post). The dining area was turned into a cozy fireplace sitting area. The space that previously housed the butler’s pantry was totally repurposed for the new beverage center. The beverage center is more accessible and allows for more storage. A large walk in pantry completes the space, accented with a custom (Bowers’ carpenter designed and built) pantry door.
