2012 Washington Metro DC Chapter Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) for Best Kitchen
This house sits on the Potomac River and has exceptional views from the kitchen. However, the kitchen was not in keeping with the setting. It was old and dark. So, we did a complete kitchen renovation that gave the kitchen a great sense of light while maintaining the elegance present in the rest of the home.
Client needs:
- Update all aspects of the kitchen; cabinets, tile, appliances, colors.
- Maintenance free or simple kitchen.
- Overall brighter kitchen.
- Neutral tones to be used; but still somewhat formal.
All these needs were met with an overall design to incorporate lighter colors, panel covered or stainless appliances that are easy to keep clean, use of white painted and cherry cabinets give the space a relaxed yet not totally casual feel.
Special Features:
Coffered Ceiling: a plain white ceiling may have caused a lot of glare with the sun bouncing off the water of the Potomac River. So, we used a coffered ceiling to break up the ceiling and still reflect some light, but not over bearing.
The painted white cabinets really brighten the space, but because the rest of the home is formal, we mixed in some cherry cabinets to add continuity with the rest of the home.
Dark granite on the white cabinet counter tops make for a very crisp look. Glass crackle tiles on the back splash add soft color and interest in the room.
We removed the grey block fireplace and replaced it with more thematically appropriate wood moldings. The moldings are “Strawberry Hill” as seen in Mount Vernon… just down the road from this home.
The client is very happy with the overall functionality, ease of maintenance and look of this new kitchen. The space is now bright and fresh and worthy of the setting on the river.
